Late-night Metrorail fares were rolled back to a flat $2 this week as part of the transit agency’s efforts to recruit new customers to replace thousands of pre-pandemic commuters who have chosen remote work over the office.
Department of Defense employees who commute from Prince William County have been watching gas prices rise, while traffic gets heavier, but new commuting options are available that include financial incentives to modify departure times or take alternative transportation, said Peggy Tadej, director of community and military partnerships for the Northern Virginia Regional Commission.
As part of a proposed initiative presented to VRE’s Operations Board Friday morning, all VRE rides would be free for the month of September. Then, for the month of October, rides from Zone 3 to Zone 1 and vice versa – from Backlick Road on the Manassas Line and Franconia-Springfield on the Fredericksburg Line up to Union Station – would be free.
