What is the Federal Mass Transportation Benefit Program?

The Department of Defense (DoD) provides mass transportation benefits, to the extent authorized by law and regulation, to offset commuting costs and to reduce pollution and traffic congestion, preserve the environment, and expand transportation alternatives. Washington Headquarters Services (WHS) administers the National Capital Region (NCR) Mass Transportation Benefit Program (MTBP) program for DoD.

How does the Mass Transportation Benefit Program work?

If you incur qualifying transportation expenses commuting to and from work, you will be eligible to receive a transit pass (media such as TRANServe Debit Card, Metrochek, voucher, SmartTrip®) download in the Washington Metropolitan Area or monthly/annual pass to cover these expenses. The maximum amount is up to $270.00 per month, and the transit passes are purchased by bureaus and offices using their appropriated funds.
